LAFCO: What is it?
Local Agency Formation Commission are "Local Independent" agencies formed originally under Governor Brown Sr. 1963 with prime respossibility to: - Discourage urban sprawl
- Provide for "orderly & efficient" Government at the local level
- Use Sphere of Influence boundaries and Service area plans to determine service capabilities
Who is LAFCO?
- LAFCO’s consist of either 5 or 7 member commission.
- The Imperial LAFCO currently consists of 5 members and 3 alternates.
- The composition by law is:
- Two Supervisors appointed by the Board of Supervisors;
- Two City Council persons appointed by the City Select Committee;
- One "public" member appointed by the above four;
- In addition, each category has one alternate.
What LAFCO is NOT!
- It is not a land use planning agency!
- It is not an elected Board!
- It is not a division of the County!
- It is not a division of any City!
- It is not the State of California!
